Vegetables & Herbs PDF Print E-mail

treeHome-grown fruits and vegetables are gaining in popularity. Raising vegetables can be extremely rewarding come harvest-time, reaping so many tasty varieties that cannot be found at the supermarket. Tending the vegetable garden is a wonderful family activity, allowing both parents and children to have a hand in producing their own food. Plus, there is the added benefit of knowing where your food comes from and how it is handled.

Fresh garden herbs liven up both vegetable and ornamental gardens with their lush foliage and enticing fragrances. Many flavorful herbs that enhance home cooking also look charming in a tidy border garden or in a small kitchen garden by the doorstep. Other herbs, like pineapple sage, bronze fennel, lemon grass and beebalm (monarda) make attractive additions to a garden border or container planting.

You don't always need a plot of land to grow fresh vegetables. Container gardening is an easy way to grow fruits and vegetables from the convenience of your own deck. Many vegetables lend themselves well to container gardening, especially the bush or dwarf varieties. The limits are only the container and your imagination . . . picture a summer salad ceramic pot or a cherry tomato windowbox.
